Thanks, Kathleen.............I grew up living beside Pokiok Falls, and have seen what it looks like now. It used to be a gorge about 200 feet deep before the construction crews building the new road after Mactaquac Dam was built on the St. John River filled the gorge with surplus rock. Even if the dam were no longer in existance, the gorge is gone because of the rock. There are lovely photos on-line of the old falls.
I am most interested in learning the date of the destruction of the original dam, built sometime during the late 1800's and still being in place in 1915. Sometime after that, the dam washed out, probably during a Spring freshet.........neglected to ask that question when I lived there.
