Stephen E. Stevens/Stephen 1824-1905
Posted by: Thomas Murray (ID *****5502) Date: January 30, 2011 at 12:43:35
  of 4923

Stephen E. Stevens/Stephens was b. Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB 15SEP1824, d. Saint John co., NB 19OCT1905 age 81 years, m. by the Rev. E. D. Very DEC1850 Elizabeth Ann Stevens (b. 2JUL1826), eldest d/o Robert Stevens.

Usually Stephen is given as a s/o Robert and Nancy (Golding) Stevens but, if their marriage announcement is correct, it was Elizabeth who was Robert and Nancy's daughter. It is probable (but not certain) that Stephen and Elizabeth were 1st cousins once removed (or, more remotely 2nd cousins?); that is, that Stephen was likely a s/o one of Robert Stevens' uncles.

A difficulty is that Robert Stevens and Nancy Golding were m. AUG1828. This is based on the 1901 census; not always reliable. In 1881 she was b. ca. 1831 and in 1891 b. ca. 1830. I would think that 1830 is more likely. If she was not a d/o Robert and Nancy, I am at a loss to find another Robert Stevens to be her father.

The first question is, who were Stephen's parents? If Stephen was Elizabeth's 1st cousin once removed, then likely parents are:

John Stevens and Catherine Stymiest/Stymest
Stephen Stevens and Eleanor (Hannah) Lingley
Isaac Stevens and Ann Cole

Less likely is the next brother:

Eliphalet Stevens m. 20APR1825 Ann Lingley

Stephen and Elizabeth may not have been related as, in addition to the Loyalist family, there were Irish families in Westfield Parish in 1851, notably:

John Stevens (ca. 1793 and his wife, Ann (ca. 1811) who arrived in 1823
and next to them:
George Stevens (ca. 1799) and his wife, Margaret (ca. 1806) also arrived 1823.

The second question is that there is a death record giving:

Elizabeth Ann Stevens b. City of Saint John ca. 1825, d. Saint John Co., NB 26FEB1907 age 78 years

but, again, the age-at-death seems to give a date-of-death that is too early. Is this Elizabeth Ann Stevens, above?

Stephen and Elizabeth appear to have lived mostly in Indiantown, Portland Parish, Saint John Co., NB; later in Queens Ward, City of Saint John (perhaps the same place.)

Thomas
