I photographed all the stones in St. Thomas Ang. Church Cemetery in Black River, Saint John Co.,NB and am in the process of uploading them to http://www.canadianheadstones.com/ . There is one stone that has a name that is not found in that area.
Charlotte APPLEBY
Who departed this life
On 10th Oct 1868
Aged 84 years
From the newspaper we learn, "d. Black River (St. John) Saturday eve. 10th inst., 8 o'clock Charlotte widow of Peter Appleby of this City, age 34. Funeral Tuesday from her son's residence, Black River, half past one o'clock p.m."
The age 34 in the newspaper is a mistake for 2 reasons.
1. the stone says "84" very clearly
2. at age 34 it is very unlikely that she would have a son who owns his own home.
So my question is, who are Peter and Charlotte APPLEBY?
I do believe she is the Charlotte APPLEBY, widow in the Wickham 1851 census and it is very likely that Peter was a shipwright in Black River as ship building was going on then, or maybe in Saint John. But I can't connect them. There is a John APPLEBY, brother of Benjamin ( who built ships in East Riverside/Rothesay, Kings Co.) who died at his brother's home in 1872 , age 69 and was buried at St. Thomas too. This suggests that John and Benjamin were Charlotte's sons.
By the way, they are NOT the couple married in Kings Co. in 1850 ( Peter Earl APPLEBY and Charlotte RICHARDS) as they are both still alive in the 1881 census.
Can anyone unravel this mystery?
