There were a surprising number of McLaughlin’s from Ireland. See the ‘immigration’ segment at the drop-down from ‘Search’ at:
http://archives.gnb.ca/Archives/Default.aspx?culture=en-CA
for just a handful in 1833-4. There are about 8 pages of McLaughlin’s.
In the same web site, at land petitions, John James McLaughlin petitions for land in Albert Co. in 1863. A John McLaughlin was granted 100 acres 8MAY1858 at Alma, Albert Co., NB. John J. McLaughlin was also granted 100 acres in the same place 9FEB1864.
In the 1865 and 1867 directories:

McLaughlin, Thomas - Curryville Albert Farmer

John W. McLaughlin b. ca. 1817, m. Rachel Steeves is said to have been of Albert Co., NB.

John McLaughlin b. ca. 1810, is said to have m. Alma, Albert Co., NB 22JUL1885; but it does not say to whom.
John James McLaughlin b. ca. 1837, m. Alma, Albert Co., NB 16NOV1859 Martha Ann McQuaid

In the 1881 census of Alma Parish, Albert Co., NB was John ‘McGlauglin’ (b. Ireland ca. 1837), and his wife, Martha (b. NB ca. 1845) and a very large family. Phyllis Dale, in an old posting archived at:

arrived in St John, New Brunswick, Canada, probably in spring 1842. They originally came from Omagh in Co Tyrone. They kept a store in St John for a couple of years, then moved up the Bay of Fundy coast to Alma area, Albert Co, where they settled. Isabel died in 1843. I have the above dates from the NB census of 1851, which also listed the family religion as Church of England (Ireland).
John James(1) died in 1907. Family lore says that John James was a baker in Ireland while Isabel's family were gentry. I have a picture of her which was taken in Ireland probably around 1830

John James, Jr. is given as Jonathan James, s/o John James. He is Jonathan James McLaughlin in several birth records as well.

In all of this, no mention is made of a family Bible. Also, no mention is made of a headstone; or, for that matter, of a clear date-of-death. Clearly not all possible resources have been examined.
However, in the 1901 census of Alma Parish, Albert Co., NB, living with Hugh McLaughlin (b. 7SEP1847), is John McLaughlin b. 9NOV1803, age 97 years. Hugh’s wife was ‘Sarrah’ A. (b. 11NOV1852; NOV1853 in 1911.) The difficulty with the 1901 census is that the enumerator asked the date-of-birth, then the age at the next birthday, then subtract that age to get the year of birth. A common error was, if the enumeration was in April, to take a March date, subtracted the age from 1901 (instead of the next birthday in 1901) resulting in a one-year error. (Not to mention guesses made by family, neighbours and the enumerator.) Above, Hugh is given as b. 7SEP1846 (SEP1846 in 1911.) Sarah Ann is given as 1852-1943. In the latter case, as the compiler uses ‘c.’ (circa) for approximate dates, it seems that Sarah’s were taken from a headstone; probably Hugh’s as well. Why was not John’s? Also, if they were Anglicans, why have not the records of the local church been searched? In any case, ins spite of the insistent date-of-birth, ca. 1810, for John, Sr. (probably derived from one or two census returns; the 1891 is mentioned), it is probable that his birthday was 9NOV, and that he was b. ca. 1803-4. In 1881, living with Hugh, he is b. ca. 1807, age 74. In Harvey Parish (of which Alma was a part) in 1851 was the family:

McLaughlin John M Head 41 Irish Farmer (prop) 1844
McLaughlin Elizabeth F Wife 28 Irish 1844
McLaughlin Matilda F Daughter 19 Irish 1844
McLaughlin Elizabeth F Daughter 17 Irish 1844
McLaughlin John L M Son 15 Irish 1844
McLaughlin Isabella F Daughter 13 Irish 1844
McLaughlin William M Son 11 Irish 1844
McLaughlin Mary Ann F Daughter 6 Birth
McLaughlin Hugh M Son 4 Birth
McLaughlin Francifs F Daughter 2 Birth
McLaughlin Margaret F Daughter 4mo. Birth

which also gives him as b. ca. 1810. So, we have 1803, 1807 and 1810 as possible years. Clearly, 1810, even as an estimate, needs further support. I would suggest consulting the 1861 and 1871 census returns. (Microfilms C-999, C-10394 and C-10395 at the national archives or possibly in a local library.)
