Thomas, thank you again for your well informed response. The drowning thing is only a family story and half of those usually turn out to be false. I believe the Peter I'm interested in died in Saint John because I found this: An entry found on Google books refers to a Peter Thompson. The book was "The Blacks in Canada" by Robin W. Winks, page 52. An excerpt from that page: "In 1793 Peter Thomson, then a slave belonging to Charles McPherson of Saint John, purchased his freedom for 30 (pounds), and when he died in debt from his tavern five years later, McPherson was one of two guarantors for those debts." I believe he's the same Peter from De Lancey's 1st Battalion who came over in 1784 because there was a Charles McPherson on the same ship. Charles was listed as a lieutenant in De Lancey's 1st battalion. I don't know how good the sources were for the above book showing that Peter died c1798. The maiden name of Marie as Boucher is a guess. Her name is written very poorly on her son's marriage record of 1818. It could be Boucher/Bouche/Boule/Gouche/Goucher/Goule or anything like that. I agree it sounds like a Quebec French name, but I guess it's not impossible she could have lived in NB. I'm not sure how William even knew what his parents names were if they died when he was young. Both of his parents were definitely dead before the marriage of William in 1818 as shown on that record. It appears there were not family members in Berthier co because no Thompsons were witnesses to any of the marriages births or deaths in William's family 1818-1828. (William died in 1828 at age 32) An historian from the Montreal area named Frank Mackey recently contacted me and told me he thought my William Thompson was the soldier who shows up in the 8th (Kings) Regiment c1815 in Montreal. I don't have any idea where my William was born, just that it was supposed to be in Canada c1796 according to all the records I have for him and his children. I suppose he could have ended up anywhere in Canada after his parents died. Since I have put all the info that I know on the internet in different places maybe I'll get lucky and someday someone will see something that looks familiar. That's what happened with Frank Mackey. It has been very challenging trying to figure out where my Thompson line came from. Maybe there was another black Peter Thompson in Canada somewhere c1790s. I could be looking at the wrong one entirely. It's been a frustrating, but very interesting line to explore. Notify Administrator about this message?
