Death of Odilon Gratton - Montreal
Posted by: Lisa Gratton (ID *****0369) Date: September 06, 2004 at 14:39:57
  of 1963

I am searching for information on the death of this individual. Odilon (Adelard, Odilard) Gratton was born Aug 6, 1867 (according to the 1901 census), his parents were Paul Gratton and Vitaline Payette-St-Amour. Odilon married Caroline Mercier (daughter of Gilbert and Zoe Levesque) May 29, 1883 at Ste-Brigide, Montreal. I have found the headstone of Paul and Vitaline, and the only other name on that side of the marker is "Odilard" born 1867 and died in 1908. I believe this is the right man. Caroline is no where to be found.

Family lore has it that Odilon and Caroline died together in a fire, and because of this 3 of their children were put up for adoption. One of these children being my great-grandfather Wilfrid. The problem with this whole thing is that in the story, Wilfrid was 3 years old - but, Wilfrid was born in 1897 and is listed on the 1901 census with his parents and siblings.

Can anyone help me determine when exactly this man died, and were he and his wife killed in a fire?

Thanks in advance,

Lisa Gratton-Pereira
(Ontario)
