What proof do you have that Eli's father was named Eli?
The Eli in Indiana in the 1870/1880 census data, is also there in 1860. Clay, St. Joseph, Indiana with a butchered last name of Hickeen os something similar. If you search for someone born Canada whose last name begins with Hic* and living in Clay, you will find the entery.
Now, Eli born about 1839-42 (depending on the sourse) is alway living next to Lewis Hickey...born about 1830. A brother perhaps. Both Lewis Hickey and Eli name first sons Lewis. This could be that the father of both Lewis and Eli is named Lewis as well.
So far have found nothing in the Canadian records. Why does someone think that the last name was different from Hickey? And where does the reference to "Ethier" come from as well?
Need to give a bit more information about the origins of this family if you have them. Even just speculation, it will help.
Since Lewis had a daughter Margaret, assume based upon her age that he was in Indiana before 1854. Funny thing is that the 1860 census seems to indicate that Margaret was born in Germany. Don't believe this is correct, just a mistake on the page...but they you never know. Could have been a word that sounded like Germany.
Let us know what else you might have and we shall see what we can find for you.......
Have a great day...Susan
