Thank you so much Jean-Marie,
This William could be the right one. Are these addresses in what is now considered the old city? My great grandmother Victoria Colquhoun Patton talked of hearing the mocassins of the natives who had ridden the logs down the river through the rapids, patting on the stones of the streets as they came back. Her father also owned a store (Alexander Colquhoun) in the old city.
Can you suggest what I can do now to go back one more generation. I have not been able to find him yet in the usual places of familysearch or rootsweb. The census of 1881 says that he was born in Quebec.
Again, thank you so much for your help
