Obituary, George J. Duncan, Sheriff of Welland Co., Ontario

Clipping glued into a notebook kept by my great-aunt by marriage Helen Oliver Robertson. Helen's mother was Elizabeth Biggar Oliver. I think Elizabeth and Helen Biggar Duncan were sisters, and that my great-aunt lived with George and Helen after her mother's death. "The funeral of the lage George J. Duncan, Sheriff of Welland County, took place on Monday, from the residence of his mother at Niagara Falls South, to the Drummond Hill cemetery. Services were held at the house by the Rev. Mr. McCuaig, after which the funeral cortege proceeded to the quiet resting place of the dead. The Masons, Odd Fellows and United Workmen societies, of which the deceased had been a member, turned out in large numbers from Welland, Niagara Falls South and Niagara Falls, while the attendance of friends and acquaintances from the surrounding country made the funeral procession the largest seen in the vicinity for many years, thus testifying to the respect in which the deceased was held. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. One of these was from the officials of the gaol, and another (an anchor) was from little Harry Cowper, with the words, "Uncle Sheff" (Sheriff) attesting the love and esteem in which he was held both in his public and private life. On the arrival of the cortege at the cemetery, the impressive burial service of the Masonic fraternity was read, and all that was mortal of the deceased was laid by the side of his daughter, who was there buried ten years ago the day of his death. Mr. Duncan was highly esteemed by all who knew him, and the family have the heartfelt sympathy of the people of Welland County."
