I'm wondering if someone might have some information on the brothers of my grandfather John Anderson, all of whom I believe were in New Zealand at some point between 1903 and 1930.
The Anderson lads were the sons of John Anderson, born 1861 in Elgin, Moray, to Alex John Anderson and Isabella Stalker McArthur, and Christina Paul, born 1862, to William Paul and Margaret Dawson of Auldearn, Nairn.
The oldest boy was William Anderson, born 1883, Elgin, Moray. He joined the Royal Navy along with my grandfather in 1903, and while serving on the HMS Challenger, he jumped ship in Auckland, New Zealand in 1905. His name is listed in the South Australia Police Gazette for that year as a deserter. I have not found any information in regards to his arrest so I am of the opinion he probably changed his surname and quietly disappeared somewhere in NZ.
The second son born was my grandfather, John Anderson, born 1885 in Rothes, Moray. After serving in the Navy during WW1, he was medically discharged in 1917, and in 1920 immigrated to New Zealand with my grandmother, and their 2 sons Ronald Alexander John Anderson, and Leonard David Beatty Anderson. They settled in Lyttleton, and 2 years later my mother was born. He died in 1953 and is buried in Temuka.I believe my grandfather kept in contact with his brother William, for my mother remembers meeting a mysterious uncle Bill a few times when she was young.
The third son was James Anderson, born 1887 in Alves, Moray. He married a woman whose first name was Becky, and they had a daughter called Iris, DOB unknown. There are pictures of him and his wife taken in Lyttleton with my grandfather around 1922.
The fourth son was Alexander Anderson, born 1889 in Rafford, Moray. There are pictures of him in New Zealand also, around 1930, and also one taken of him on a ship.
I have no idea whether the boys stayed in New Zealand or traveled elsewhere, maybe Australia or Canada? Their names are very common so it's like looking for a needle in a haystack really.
If anyone does have information I would be willing to email the pictures of the brothers to help verify their identity.
