Hi Joseph,

Do you know what years John's siblings were born?

I am trying to trace him and started with looking for sister Dagny as her name is so unusual and found a Dagny Rigmer SMITH born about

She is crossing the border from Canada to US Feb. 4, 1944
she is on a Canadian passport which they say was issued in Montreal in 1944
She was born Vejen, Denmark July 11, 1920
she is a bookkeeper
last permanent address 3612 Durocher St. Montreal
her contact is her mother Mrs. Frederika Smith at the same address in Montreal
Her contact in US is her sister Margaret Nielsen, 912 2nd Ave. South, Great Falls, Montana
she is going for a 2-3 month visit with her sister who is ill
she is shown as first arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 5/9/27 (may be 3/9/27 - hard to read)
aboard the SS United States

****************

so next I tried to find this Dagny coming into Canada in 1927 and I think I found them listed as surname SCHMIDT

Here is the entry for their father and I will give you names of all the family accompanying him.

Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935 about Nicolaj Nielsen Schmidt
Name:       Nicolaj Nielsen Schmidt
Gender:       Male
Age:       44
Estimated Birth Year:       abt 1883
Birth Country:       Denmark
Date of Arrival:       9 May 1927
Vessel:       United States
Search Ship Database:       View the 'United States' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival:       Halifax, Nova Scotia
Port of Departure:       Copenhagen, Denmark
Roll:       T-14810

Here are the family names shown in image - some of it is a little hard to read so will do my best, but the names seem to match pretty closely with what you have. Also I see Nicolaj as 45, not 44.

SCHMIDT

Nicolaj Nielsen, age 45, born Vejen, Denmark, farm labourer

Frederikke M.D., wife, age 43, born Nustrup, Denmark

Margrethe S., daughter, age 19, born Vejen, Denmark

Niels M., son, age 15, born Vejen, Denmark

Sofie M., daughter, age 15 born Vejen, Denmark

Frederik, son, age 11, born Vejen, Denmark

Jergen, son, age 10, born Vejen, Denmark

Dagney R., daughter, age 6, born Vejen, Denmark

they all show they are going to Peterson, New Brunswick
they also all have contact in Denmark as Niels Nicolaj SCHMIDT of Vejen
he is shown as father of Nicolaj
all are shown as landed immigrants

*****************

so from this it looks like your John was Jergen

From the border crossing for Dagny, her sister was Margaret Nielsen living in Montana, and from the 1927 passenger list, her middle initial was S.
In 1940 US census there is a Margretha S. Nielsen age 32 (which fits) living in Roosevelt, Montana with husband Harold N. age 42, born Denmark and children

John Harold, age 6 - adopted son born Canada
Merte, age 4, daughter born Canada
Miriam E., age 10/12, daughter , born Canada

one of the questions asked in the 1940 census was where each person lived in 1935
Harold and Margaretha shown Victoria, New Denmark, Canada
son John Harold shows Queens, St. Johns

** so it looks to me that they may have been in Victoria, B.C. in 1935 ? as I have never heard of New Denmark
BUT maybe there is a Victoria in New Brunswick - I'm not sure
I am thinking it may be NB as I just found a border crossing for a
Niels Harold NIELSEN , Oct. 12, 1939, crossing with wife and two children
last residence - Salmonhurst, NB
he was born Denmark
is listed as a minister
going to Eben-Ezer Danish Church, Dane Valley, McCabe, Montana
contact - brother Theodor Nielsen, Toftlund, Denmark

So I looked for any other Nielsen names crossing on same day and found
Margrete Sofie
John Harald
Miriam Elizabeth
Merte Feldbek

so he actually had wife and 3 children with him, not 2

I looked at the children and Merte shown born Montreal
Miriam born Montreal
John Harald born St. John, New Brunswick

their contact is grandmother Mrs. Frederikke SCHMIDT 3612 Durocher St. Montreal so matches with other info

Margarete Sofie shown born Vejen, Vestermark, Denmark
contact is her mother Frederikke SCHMIDT same address as above

I found baptism for

Miriam Elizabeth Feldbak Nielsen

Quebec, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1967 about M E F Nielsen
Name:       M E F Nielsen
Event:       Baptême (Baptism)
Baptism Year:       1939
Baptism Location:       Montréal, Québec (Quebec)
Place of Worship or Institution:       Lutheran Saint Ansgar Danish

Says: Miriam Elizabeth Feldbak Nielsen, born in Montreal, Quebec on the 11th day of May, 1939, daughter of Niels Harald Nielsen and wife Margrete Sofie Schmidt, was baptized by undersigned pastor on the 4th day of June 1939.
Parent signed
Witnesses signed: Niels Nicolajsen Smith and Sophie Magdelene Jyser

I am not at all sure of Sophie Magdelene's last name

*********************
AND Merete

Quebec, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1967 about Merete Feldbeck Nielsen
Name:       Merete Feldbeck Nielsen
Event:       Baptême (Baptism)
Baptism Year:       1935
Baptism Location:       Montréal, Québec (Quebec)
Place of Worship or Institution:       Lutheran Saint Ansgar Danish

It says:

Merete Feldbeck Nielsen born the 1st day of November 1935 at Montreal, daughter of the Reverend Niels Harald Nielsen and his wife Margarethe Sofie Schmidt, both residing at Salmonhurst, NB, Victoria Co., was registered this 15th day of November 1935 and the registration signed by the mother of the child and prescribing witnesses

Both mother and father actually signed as well as witnesses
Viggo Jepson and Sophie Jepson

so that I think is same Sophie signing so name is Jepson, not Jyser (much clearer her)

I looked for a marriage for Viggo Jepson to confirm if this was your Sophie, sister of Margarethe

Quebec, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1967 about Jepsen
Name:       Jepsen
Spouse:       Smith
Event:       Mariage (Marriage)
Marriage Year:       1931
Marriage Location:       Montréal, Québec (Quebec)
Place of Worship or Institution:       Lutheran Saint Ansgar Danish

It says:

Viggo Jepsen, bachelor of full age of Montreal and Sophie Magdelene Smith, a minor but with consent of only living parent, Mrs. M.N. Smith, was has signed as witness - given into marriage on this 6th day of December 1931 at Montreal, Quebec, Canada by authority of publication of banns.
both signed as well as witnesses
Frederikke Smith and another name I cannot read

************************
Quebec, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1967 about Arthur Viggo Jepsen
Name:       Arthur Viggo Jepsen
Event:       Baptême (Baptism)
Baptism Year:       1936
Baptism Location:       Montréal, Québec (Quebec)
Place of Worship or Institution:

Says:
Arthur Viggo Jepsen, born at Montreal the 28th day of October, 1936, son of Viggo Jepsen and his wife Sophie Magdalene Schmidt, was baptized this 6th day of December 1936 in the presence of subscribing witnesses.
Sage Jepsen
Frederikke Schmidt

I am going to look for more but want to post this before it is lost as sometimes the posts seem to just disappear before I have a chance to send them.
