Peter Murray and Elizabeth Sutherland are my ggg grandparents. I too have read some of the family legend and am familiar with some of the information that you included in your post.
Based on birth information obtained from ScotlandsPeople, Peter and Elizabeth had the following children: Isobel (Isabella) born in 1813, Jean born in 1815, John born in 1817, Christian Sutherland born in 1819, Janet born in 1822, Johanna born in 1825, George born in 1828, Dollina born in 1830 and John born in 1833.
Based on information provided in the 1901 Canada census for George Murray, the family immigrated to Canada in 1837 (this is probably fairly accurate). At this point in time, Canada was not yet a country. It consisted of several British colonies. The Murrays settled in the Township of East Zorra, Oxford County, Upper Canada (now the province of Ontario). Peter owned lots 24 and 25 (or parts of) in concession 10 of East Zorra Township.
In 1844, Johanna married John Mackay. John was also born in Langwell to William MacKay and Ann Ross. Like Peter, William was also a tenant farmer. The MacKay family probably immigrated to East Zorra Township at about the same time as the Murray family. The MacKay farm was located fairly close to the Murray farm. By 1861, John and Johanna had moved to Tuckersmith Township, Huron County, Canada West (formally Upper Canada, now the province of Ontario) where they operated a very successful farm. They produced seven children: Annie, Betsey, Lillian (Lily), Peter, William, Donald Murray and John. William is my great grandfather.
At the time of the 1852 census, George and Dollina were living with their parents, Peter and Elizabeth, in East Zorra Township.
At the time of the 1861 census, George and his wife were living George’s parents, Peter and Elizabeth, in East Zorra Township.
At the time of the 1871 census, Peter is living with his son George and family.
Elizabeth Sutherland died in 1865 and Peter died on 12 November 1873 in East Zorra Township.
I am interested in the parents of Peter Murray and Elizabeth Sutherland and the parents of William MacKay and Ann Ross.
