The 1851 census (actually taken in early 1852) shows the family in Bentinck Township, Grey County, Canada West (now Ontario). It indicates that James & Mrs. James (her name not given) were born in Ireland while the boys were born in Scotland. It also indicates that Mrs. James & William were residents of Chinguacousy which is in Peel County, which leads me to believe that she was living elsewhere while her husband and son, Robert, were working on settling the new farm.

Is this the right family, as I find the death of a Robert Paterson of the right age in 1906 from Bentinck Township, and the 1861 census has him living with his brother, William, and three children.
