William: Catherine and Kate could be the same person except for the discrepancy in parents. Curiously, George may be John's older brother, if the McTagarts in 1841 Scottish census quoted in Eileen's response are the family I seek,as they well might be. There seem to be several ways to spell the name. In the 1861 census of Upper Canada it is spelled McIntaggart. I have not been able to find birth registrations for George and Mary's children, but on her marriage registration their daughter Margaret's birth place is listed as Hamilton c.1855 so they may have lived there when they came to Canada and moved to Ekfrid before the 1861 census. Thanks to you both for leading me in new directions. There are lots of pieces still to find! Any help is welcome.
