Hi Leanne:

Gonyea is the Americanized version of Gagné, Gagnier. If your ancestors were from Canada, expect to have to switch the spelling of their surname and orient your research accordingly.

Also, note that there is a Gagné site on Genforum and Ancestry.com that you might want to use.
My wife is a Gagnier (Gagné) with ancestry in Canada and France going back to 1600.
