John (Jan Langestraat) Longstreet, Jr.,

John (Jan Langestraat) Longstreet, Jr., b. 24 JUN 1744, Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey,
m. c. 1767, Monmouth, New Jersey, Helena (Helen Conover) Joseph Covenhoven,
d. 20 Aug 1788, Parrsboro Township, Cumberland Co., Nova Scotia, Canada.

We are assuming that the following person is his son.

John Longstreet III, b. 1796, New Jersey [See 1861 Census, Halton, Ontario, Canada.]

This cannot be, since his father died in 1788.

There must be a problem with the record, s.a., 1796 might be 1786, or even 1769; or this is not his son.

". . .John III is from an earlier marriage or relationship as he appears to be substantially older than the others, according to the Estate papers."]

I just meant Capt. John's will and the related correspondence with the executors. I believe you have that information in your possession. Just the fact that his son John is one of his executors and given the baptism dates of Richard and Lydia, I think it would be reasonable to assume that John III is quite a bit older than the three other children mentioned in the will. Of course, we don't know what happened to any other children they may have had in the intervening years. Do you know if John and Helena had more children than these four?]

Also, John might have been their first child, born c. 1767.

The probate record shows the following:

PRO L-15 LONGSTREET John Parrsboro 28 Oct 1788*
PRO L-4 LONGSTREET Hannah daughter

PRO L-4 LONGSTREET John Parrsboro 28Oct 1788*
PRO L-4 LONGSTREET Lydia daughter

PRO L-4 LONGSTREET John Parrsboro 28 Oct 1788*
PRO L-4 LONGSTREET Richard son

PRO L-4 LONGSTREET John Parrsboro 28 Oct 1788*

LONGSTREET John Parrsboro 28 Oct 1788*
NOT GIVEN Beth slave

Elisha Lawrence - gone to Great Britain
Helena (Helen Conover) Covenhoven - Executrix, not being well, and the distance being Leagues across the Sea
John Longstreet - then being in New England States and never Appeared until the Day of the Date hereof to take on him his Executorship
John Vought - Executor, his trusty and well beloved friend
Edward Potts - Proved the will

Do you have any ideas about how to solve this problem?
