I have seen the passenger listing for Samuel when he came to Canada....... bit hard to read but both he and Thomas McFarland were either listed as adults OR, as someone else who viewed it said, the mark was a "ditto" mark which would mean they were both 17 years old, same as the name above theirs........ my Great Grandfather, Samuel's brother was listed as 25 on the 1891 Census and 25 again when he married in 1894 - we have no exact date for his age either (I have found 3 different birth dates for my GGF) - so I suppose the 17 on the passenger list would fit with my GGF's age.......
