How can you thank her? How about reimbursing her for her time and expense? It costs money for gas to go to the library and money to pay for parking in Vancouver. Bus costs $5.00 round trip for 2 zones in Vancouver on weekdays ($3.50 round trip on weekends). .40 cents for the the photocopy (which sometimes can be tricky to find so some time can be involved there), then there is postage, .46 in Canada or .55 to the U.S.
I used to be like Meg offering to do free lookups for people because I wanted to help. But after about 1 year I figured out how much it cost me out of my own pocket for transportation, copying, postage and I was floored by how much it cost. Sure it may be a few cents or a couple of dollars, but it adds up and fast. Sure, she might say she was going to the library anyway, but think about it, it adds up, money-wise and time-wise. Now when I need help and someone is offering to do a free lookup, I always send them $5 or $10 (depending on how much I ask) - I know it didn't cost them that much but at least it helps towards how much other people are costing them and I feel good about not feeling like I'm using someone to get free stuff.
