George Gairns and Jane Burr - Ontario to British Columbia
Posted by: Rob Burr (ID *****1974) Date: February 14, 2010 at 04:13:22
  of 2043

George was born about 1850 in Ontario, the son of James Gairns and Bridget Malone(y). He married Jane Burr on 17 April 1872 in Pilkington, Wellington County, ON. She was born in about 1850 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the daughter of Andrew Burr and Ann Stephen.

In the 1890s the family moved from Ontario to New Westminster, BC. Jane died there on 5 August 1918 and George died on 7 July 1928.

They had 9 known children, all born in Ontario:, Ann (c. 1873), Elsie Ross (24 Aug 1874), James (c. 1876), Jane/Jean (3 Jan 1878), George (c. 1879), William (c. 1882), Andrew (19 Oct 1883), Sidney (May 1886) and Sarah (23 Feb 1888)

Of these children:

Ann is believed to have married someone surnamed Gibbings (or similar name)
Elsie married George Monteith in 1897 and remained in BC until her death in 1950
James is believed to have gone to Washington and married Florence Hardy. He died in 1950 and Florence in 1960
Jane/Jean also went to Washington and married someone surnamed Abbott. She died in Bellingham in 1959.
George is also thought to have gone to Washington.
Andrew is also believed to have gone to Washington and married twice, firstly to Louise Hanbrock and then to Laura Murphy.
It is not certain whether Sidney/Sydney was a son or daughter the 1891 census records a son Sidney; the 1901 census records a daughter Sydney.
Sarah is believed to have died in infancy

I am keen to hear from anyone who knows more about this family - Jane Burr was a distant cousin of my grandfather.

I can be contacted directly at
