I did find his Cdn Expedition. papers on-line and he gives his age as 37 and born 1 March 1879 (not 1872) in Calcutta, India. The forms were filled out in Vernon, B.C., which is in the interior of British Columbia, near Kelowna. I see that he married in Southampton in 1900 Daisy Ellen Tout, a daughter of Edmund and Ellen Tout and she is enumerated with her parents in the 1901 Southampton census (no sign of husband Andrew) along with 3-mos old son Andrew Edmund. Also found births of 3 of their other children on-line (Kathleen D.E. in 1906; Arrabella May in 1908; and Lilian R. in 1910 - all born in Southampton).
I cannot find him anywhere, in any country, in the 1901 census nor in the 1911 census (but that sure looks like him in Nanaimo - don't worry about accuracy in that census - I would be willing to bet that the perosn who supplied the information was the Boarding House owner and not his lodgers.)
As this is such a mystery, do you know his parents' names or where he may have been in both the 1881 and 1891 censuses. Do you think he gave his birthplace as India when he actually may have been born at sea? Did he never live in England except when he married?
I have access to all censuses in Canada, Gt. Britain, and US, but would need some more clues re his parentage and where he was. If in India until his 1900 marriage, then I can't help out.
