Hi Barry:
I found Lawrence's entry into Canada:

Name: Lawrence Abernethy
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1887
Date of Arrival: 6 Apr 1913
Vessel: Scandinavian
Port of Arrival: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Roll: T-4748

Since he came after 1911, there are no census records to search and Alberta just does not have much info online. You might try looking for Calgary cemeteries to see if you can find him...wife would possibly be buried next to him if you don't have her name. Also, Calgary might have some pioneer books so put his name into google plus Calgary Alberta and see if anything comes up.
Write me if you want some more help or can think of anything else you know.
Brenda in BC
