George SALTER was born (July 18, 1892) into a family of 10 at 156 Kirkgate, Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. Thomas, the father disappeared, & the mother Clara died, resulting in the breakup of the family. Aunts & uncles attempted to care for the children but 2 of them, Leonard 14 (April 7, 1886) & Oscar 12 (January 14, 1888), came to Canada with a Dr. Barnardo's group, leaving England July 18, 1901, on the S.S. Numidian. They arrived in Quebec July 29, 1901. As was usual & unforgiving, the brothers were separated. The good news is that Leonard & Oscar have been found, but the search for George continues.
Now our information becomes cloudy.
George, the 3rd British Home Child, left England July 15, 1903 aboard S.S. Dominion & arrived at Quebec, July 25, 1903. He may have started his Canadian journey in Peterborough, but the first record we have of him is living with the John C. NELSON family near Claresholm (Twp.12 Rge 27 MacLeod District), Alberta. The NELSON's were originally from the US, which makes it logical that the next time we hear of George, he and Ivan NELSON are in the US army (WW1, US Draft registration). This information courtesy of Lethbridge Branch of the Alberta Genealogical Society.
This is the extent of our information. We would appreciate your searching skills in helping us find George SALTER, and also to complete the circle, members of the NELSON family too.
We have been most fortunate & appreciative of the overwhelming assistance we have received so far. Thank you.
