Hello,
In looking at the Birth, Marriages and Death Registrations 1870-1905 book Vol 1 by the Edmonton Branch of the Alberta Genealogy Society, it states as follows:

Baker, William Mortimer and Clara Esaw had a son born Jan 5, 1899 - the place was not given, he was named William Mortimer Baker.

Baker, William Mortimer died on November 28, 1898 at the age of 38 years, again, place wasn't given.

Some older editions of newspapers are online
http://www.ourfutureourpast.ca/newspapr/
which you might wish to browse.
The story may have made the papers that weren't in the area, so it might be worth a look at what is available online.

Hope this helps,
~Shannon
