Mike,
I looked to see if I could find Emma with parents David and Jane. This looks like it is her but she is listed as Emily.
As you can see there are various spellings of the name in census records. This is very common as I suppose the enumerators just spelled it the way they heard it. Also in the indexes sometimes the person who indexed did not read the entry correctly and you get yet another spelling of the names.
1870 CLAY, CARROLL, INDIANA (Post Office: Pyrmont)
SHUTTHISE
David, age 37, farmer, born Germany
Jane, age 35, keeping house, born Holland
Mary, age 11, at home, born Ohio
Emily, age 9, at home, born Ohio
John, age 8, at home, born Ohio
Charles, age 5, at hoe, born Ohio
GRAHAM, John, age 24, doctor, born Indiana

1860 LEMON, BUTLER, OHIO (Post Office: Middletown)
SHOLPARI
David, age 27,farm hand, born Wurttenburg
Jane, age 29, born Holland
Mary E., age 1,born Ohio
** I've given you the spelling as it is in the index. In the image of the actual entry it looks like SHOLHEISE

I looked for David and Jane in 1850 census. I didn't find either of them, so it may be either that I missed them somehow or that they had not yet come to the U.S. from Germany and Holland.
We do know they were both in U.S. by 1860 so if there parents came to U.S. as well they should be in that census if still alive. I didn't have any luck there.
You asked for some advice on searching. I would suggest you try to find the death certificate for Daniel as it may have his parents names.
Also try to get his marriage certificate for the same reason.
I have had some luck with getting copies of marriage records through state genealogical societies or libraries.
As David and Emma were married in Carroll Co. IN, I would suggest you send for a copy of their marriage record. From the database where I found their marriage it shows the original record is at the County Clerk's office and even lists the book and page number so it should be easy for them to find it for you.

** This is on the same page as where I found Emma and her children living with her sister Mary and husband Allen Wagoner.
** so David must have died between 1880 and 1900. There is no 1890 census as most of it was destroyed so I cannot find the family there to see if he was living at that time.
I did find the death of Jane.

I looked though all of the David men with a surname starting with S but did not find your David. The County mayhave the record though, so it is worth checking there.

Is there any chance that the family could have been in Canada in 1930 so missed the 1930 census?
Let me know if you want me to look for death records for any of Russell and Martha's children.
