Gov. David Campbell, buried in Abingdon, VA
I have a brochure on the Sinking Spring Cemetery; site #13:
"Governor David Campbell lived as a young boy in the tavern near the courthouse and then on the family farm at Hall's Bottom. After serving in the War of 1812, he held the post of deputy clerk and clerk of the court. He served as governor from 1837-40, during which time he advocated for compulsory education for all children. His wife, Mary Hamilton Campbell, suffered with depression, which may have inspired his successful mission to establish a state mental institution in Staunton.Following their stay in Richmond, they lived out their lives at Montcalm, where he wrote a memoir of his boyhood in Abingdon."His stone is pictured.
I am not researching these people and have no further information.
