A biography/family history of Ray L. Campbell is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 1056 & 1057. Ray was born 18 Mar 1882, son of Jonathan N. and Jennie (Logan) Campbell. Jonathan was born near Shubonacadia, Nova Scotia, trained to the carpenter and farmer trade, married Jennie Logan there, and in 1879 moved to settle near Long Lake, MN, where he was a farmer. Jennie Logan was the daughter of William Logan. Jonathan and Jennie's children: James E. (Jamestown, ND), William (Vancouver, WA); Ethel (Mrs. B.F. Joslyn, Minneapolis); Ray L. (Phillips Co., MT); Catherine (Mrs. Adolph Beck, Norfolk, NE); George (Big Sandy, MT); Paul J. (Minot, ND).

Ray remained on the family farm until he was 18 when he came to Big Sandy, MT, where he worked on a ranch and then was employed as a clerk at the McNamara and Marlow store.

In 1903, Ray came to Malta, MT, where he was a ranch hand and cowboy before filing on a homestead 20 miles north of Malta.

On 27 Apr 1908, Glasgow, MT, Ray married Miss Emma Trafton, born 1888, MN, only child of R.M. and Marian (Knowlton) Trafton. R.M. Trafton was a noted pioneer of Montana. Ray Campbell engaged in the stock business with his father-in-law. Ray also owned an irrigated farm 4 miles north of Malta. In 1919, he became county treasurer.

Campbell children: Jennie Marion; Ethel May; Ray Lois; Robert Macantosh Campbell, b. 23 Jun 1920.
