Bruard Briard Brewer Campbell of Little Bras D'or, Cape Breton
I have a John Alexander that was the illegitimate son of Joseph Campbell, & Mary Bruard,
Godparents: Angus Benoit & Elizabeth Young, Joseph Chisholm, parish priest,
baptised 04/07/1875
born 03/27/1875
records at St.
Joseph's in L'Bras d'Or
It is noted in the margin that he is illitimate and that he took his mother's name. But as an adult he used his father's name.
Usually when the parents aren't married, it is the mother's family who are godparents. Could she be a Young and not a Brewer. The Youngs were originally Lejeune dit Briard and ofter members went by Briard alone.
Looking at the godparents, Henry Benoit & Elizabeth Young (Lejeune dit Briard) Perhaps Mary Bruard was Elizabeth's neice. Elizabeth was born around 1810. Mary Bruard must have been near 20 when John Alexander was born, so perhaps she was born around 1855.
Elizabeth Young's brother had a daughter Mary born around that time. (1848) In 1881, Mary was living 35 and living at home with her parents, probably unmarried.
In 1876 a Mary Young was godmother to her sisters son David Lewis Campbell.
I don't know if the Mary mentioned is actually the Mary I'm looking for.
John Alexander's marriage and death certificate just say 'Joseph Campbell and Mary Brewer' were his parents. There is a Mary Bruard that married a Thomas Bonar in 1876 in Little Bras D'or. Could this be the Mary. I have had no success in finding her death, or birth, of in any census to track which family she may be from. Any help on the above, or where to look to search would be appreciated.
