Your James who died abt 1793 would not be the son of Gilbert Campbell. Gilbert's James must have died prior to his son Patrick as He is not mentioned in the son's estate. One of the problems with bad records is a quote from a text about Lexington which states that a portion of Gilbert Campbell's land was donated for the town by Gilbert's son Isaac. However, this should have read GRANDSON. the Land was inherited first as a gift or early bequest to the oldest son James. That is why in Gilbert's will he give James only a small amount of money....because he had already given him land. When James died, (no will or probate has been located) the land surely went to his sons, and with Isaac most likely the oldest, he had the control of most of it.There are many documents on record with Isaac and land actions. It could be assumed that each of James' sons had some inheritance. The inventory and probate for Patrick gives a picture of a well to do and educated family. Now for your James, I am not sure who he belongs to. Could be the other Campbell lines that are pretty prolific too.
The world tree has the siblings of Gilbert Campbell and upline for a number of generations. Seems the family were pretty prominent in Scotland....until the political tides changed in the early 1700's. I hope someone has info for you.
