Samuel, Jr. of Rutland, VT to Gallia County, OH?
Hi Guys,
I've got a fascinating situation.I've been told time after time that I'm a descendant of Samuel Campbell, Sr. of Charles County, MD, who married Sarah Foster. And of that I have little doubt, Foster was a typical given name in my family since that time. However, to throw a monkey wrench into it I was at the Recorder's Office here in Gallia County, Ohio researching when my Campbell's first came to Gallia County.
I found a Samuel Campbell, Jr. who purchased, from an Elias Hall of New Braintree, Worcester, MA, for the sum of $1,000 one full share in the Ohio [Land] Company. This Samuel was of Rutland County, VT.
Later, on the 20th of October, 1830, a Samuel Campbell purchased a piece of property in Green Twp., Gallia County, Ohio and then four years later turned around and sold it at 30% of what he paid for it.The person he sold it to was Elisha Campbell. My 3rd great grandfather was Elijah Foster Campbell.I assume they just spelled his name the way they heard it. I assume that it was father selling to son and that's why he was willing to take such a huge loss, $350 was a lot of money in 1834.
Does anyone know if there were two Samuel Campbells running around Gallia County?Did Samuel Campbell of Rutland, VT even ever come to Gallia County, or did he just buy a share in the Ohio Company, that wound up recorded in Gallipolis? So many questions :-)
