Claire,
I found this site that filled me in with so much, especially discussion about alias's and name changes that were happening.

After much reading and going in to the MacPhail Clan history in the area, I am convinced that my relative William Cameron Alias MacPhail changed his name to just Cameron before he got married to Anne Grant. The Inveravon arm of the MacPhail family went in to a tragedy where they lost their land. So I am hazarding a guess that Anne Grant didn't want to marry and take the doomed family MacPhail name. Probably none of them did. Them being the main sept of the Camerons meant he could easily take on the Cameron name, and especially in a climate of many doing alias's.
As a Cameron, a William went to the US and became a very successful business man in Chicago with a big canning factor there...quite famous in the US really. Most interesting to read all this. What he got to lose to know the truth when he did so well. However cannot find a contact email anywhere. Probably a lot of deniers out there within this arm of the Cameron Family. Investigating further than this...the LDS site has the information.
The MacPhail motto was "Be Mindful". And someone cracked a joke saying it should have been "beware of fast women and slow horses" stating that one of the family heads was weak and suffered from the "cupidity" of his wife.
For some obscure reason I suspected they may have changed their name because one struggled to get further back.
Even on the Clan Cameron they go so far back but no further
which is kind of strange.
By the way I dont mind being a MacPhail. The tartan is lovely.
