Cameron or Dow? Banffshire, Scotland
would anyone know how to break through an alias barrier or even prove one?
I am (still!) looking for a Charles Cameron born abt: 1780 in Tomintoul, Kirkmichael Banffshire (birth taken from death record so it should be fairly accurate). His death certificate states his parents are:
James CAMERON and Helen TAYLOR
The family, I think, were "hiding behind" an alias, being Catholic or Jacobite sympathisers or both!- I have now found the birth of a Charles DOW - 17 Sep 1780 in the Tomintoul RC Register born to:
James DOW and Helen TAYLOR
tracing the DOW family I find 3 other children, born in Drum of Carron, Aberlour with the last one being born there in 1778, which would mean the DOW family moved into Tomintoul between 1778 & 1780.
both Charles and father James CAMERON are listed as "tenementers" or feuars in Tomintoul on Charles' death notice
the time of the move to Tomintoul would fit with "both" families as the village of Tomintoul did not come into being until 1775 so the Camerons couldn't have been there before then either. Those that did move into the village were known as tenementers so the James DOW would have been known as this too.
The DOW family also name their other 3 sons Joseph (unusual at the time), William and John and "my" Charles CAMERON names 3 of his sons Joseph, William and John too.. (perhaps after his "brothers"?)
I cannot find a marriage for James DOW and Helen TAYLOR (which would be about 1764) in Banffshire, but I can find one for James GREY and Helen TAYLOR, Mortlach, Banffshire 23 Aug 1764, - is this again another coincidence?
my thoughts are that if this is one and the same family they are maybe from the CAMERONs that "disappeared" after Culloden? therefore James GREY/DOW could have been the first of them to use an alias and my Charles the first to resume the CAMERON family name - if Joseph is his eldest brother, he continued to use the name DOW and emigrated.. and I can't find proven trace of the other 2 x brothers, William and John under either surname or any trace of James DOW/CAMERON and Helen TAYLOR deaths so I am a bit stuck and don't know how much one can put down to "guesswork"
any ideas?
