Dear Phyllis,
I think we are distant cousins. Angus Cameron & Margaret McDonald (I think her name was actually Ann McDonald) ran the inn and ferry at Aird Ferry, Dornie, near Kyle of Lochalsh, Ross-shire, Scotland from at least 1841. They were both from Lochaber. Thereafter their daughter Miss Ann Cameron took over until her death in 1890. Two of her nephews - both named Donald Cameron - one born in Victoria, Aus, the other in Mabou, Cape Breton then took over from her. One of the Donalds married and was still at Aird Ferry with his wife and young family in 1901. They later moved to Inverness. I'm in touch with one of Donald's granddaughters.
I've been trying to discover more about the Cape Breton & Victoria branches of the family and with the help of the genealogies on a Clan Cameron website I've made some progress. Recently I have found more information on some of the Cape Breton Camerons too. I find it all totally fascinating.
I'm not a descendant of Angus & Ann myself. My mum's maiden name is Cameron and older members of the family remembered going to Kyle of Lochalsh to visit a relative, an Ann Cameron who ran a hotel there. Having searched carefully through censuses etc the family mentioned above are the only Camerons who ran a hotel in that area. So I'm fairly confident that these are my kin.
My ancestry goes back to another Angus Cameron who came down to Glasgow (where I still stay) from Invernessshire in the early 1800s. Angus in Glasgow was probably a nephew of Angus in Lochalsh.
I hope this reaches you, I notice that your email was posted quite a few years ago. I'd be delighted to share more information with you.
best wishes,
George Hebenton
