RE Camerontown Finch Township

My neighbour for many years was Mr. I. Coulthart whose grandmother was Jessie Cameron who was married to a Norman from Monkland, Ontario.

Camerontown which was a few miles west of Finch Village is now called by the name of Goldfield. Camerontown was named for a Cameron family which settled in that area c early 1820s/30s][they were not related to the four Camerons[Alex and his sons who first hiked to Finch Township from Lochiel Township]. Hugh Samuel Cameron, born Scotland c 1817, migrated as a young man and stayed a short time with relatives in Willilamstown[Mayfield] before continuing to Finch Township[from his obit].

From an article by Mrs. Sarah Eamon c 1931, she states:

"...John Cameron, age 21, came from Inverness with his mother and three brothers, Hughie, Alex and Dougald. They settled west of Finch and this was called Camerontown[now Goldfield]. Hughie settled on the farm west of John and Dougald settled near Berwick. John Cameron was married at 28 to Mary MacMillan. They had four daughters. This John Cameron had an uncle who was a wealthy ship owner who left a large fortune in a London Bank for his nephew, John...."

Further, in a letter which Mrs.Katharine LeGrow wrote Jan 22nd, 1986[a granddaughter of Hugh Samuel Cameron, born 1817] she stated: " ...My great grandfather, Samuel Cameron, emigrated from Inverness Scotland in the early 1800s. He brought my grandfather, Hugh, to join him. I'm not sure if his brothers and sisters were born in Scotland. Hugh [Samuel] married Nancy Cameron==not closely related if at all == They had a family of six, Donald, John, Duncan[my father] [Note; mc....the tombstone for her father, Duncan A. Cameron, is in the Finch Cemetery]Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Samuel. Only Duncan and Samuel married, and I am the only grandchild in that large family. They are all buried in the cemtery at Finch..." "...my grandfather, Hugh[Samuel] had one brother who married a Cameron, a first cousin of my grandmother, Nancy Cameron. They had: Jessie[who married a Norman] Sandy S and Hugh. Hugh married and moved to B.C. He had four sons == Grant, Lochiel, Alex, and Borden. All of them are married and have families....I think my grandfather, Hugh [Samuel] had another brother, and he had a son, Sandy Cameron, who lived in Cornwall. Hugh's[Samuel] sister, Margaret, married a Park and they had a son and three daughters, Jim, Annie, Maggie and Mary. Allan Cameron[born Quebec]Hugh Samuel's brother in law lived in the white house which later became the funeral parlour[I remember him..mc] ..... my Cameron homestead eastofwhere the late Donald MacIntyre lived. He bought it from my uncle, Sam Cameron. That of course is not the original house..."....."...also, northeast of Finch there was the Archie Big Duncan CAmeron family [Note:my granduncle....my father was born on this farm...mc] I think theis family was Hugh(very tall), Hannah(Mrs Croil MacLean[Note: Aunt Hannah was married to my mother's brother...mc] and Stanley...."

Comment: The name "Samuel" is usually a 'Glennevis name'. Samuel being anglicised from Somerled. Hugh Samuel seemed to have a relation to Duncan the furtrader's family in Williamstown, according to obit, etc. The Duncan 'the furtrader' family were descended from the CAmerons of Glennevis, thereby, being connected to my father's family, etc.[Lot 21-4 Finch]I hope the foregoing is of some help to you.

Margaret Cameron,
Long Sault Ontario
