I think we are getting our Duncans and Marthas mixed up. The one born in 1849 in Middlesex, Vt would be too late to be "my" Martha, who was b. c1776 in NH.The 1849 Martha might be a child of one of Duncan's sons.I don't have the names of his children besides Martha, and Daniel.
In the Barre, VT city clerk's office is a death record for Martha Drury, who died in Barre 17 Sep 1859, aged 83 y 3m 6d.The record states that she was born in Fitzwilliam, NH to Duncan and Phebe Cameron. [Duncan Cameron is on the 1790 census in Fitzwilliam.]She married Joseph Drury, who also was born in Fitzwilliam in 1777.Their first child was born there in 1799, and then they moved first to Rockingham, Windham Co, VT, and later to Barre, where Duncan Cameron already lived. A deed of trust exists between Duncan Cameron of Barre and Joseph Drury of Rockingham, dated 1802, whereby Joseph is using his land in Rockingham as collateral for a $500 loan from Duncan, his father-in-law.
It is the Gazetteer of Washington County, VT 1783-1889(Syracuse, NY: H. Child, 1889), p 316 which says "Duncan Cameron, a Scotchman, went to Quebec with General Wolfe. He made his way to Williamstown, Mass. and removed to Barre some time before 1800.He reared a numerous family and died in Barre. His son Daniel resided in Berlin, then Duxbury and settled in Middlesex where he died in 1844.His [Daniel's] son A.J. now resides in Middlesex, and his son Ira in Worcester."
I was in Barre last summer, and was never able to find a death or cemetery record for Duncan Cameron or any other mention of him besides Martha Cameron Drury's death record [B-M-D, book 3, #34] and his appearance on the 1800 census in Barre. He does not show up on the census after 1800, so must have died before the next census in 1810.
Martha and her husband Joseph Drury are buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Barre but no record of a Cameron there.I also checked vital records of Williamstown, MA and could find no record of Duncan Cameron there.
There was an ensign, Duncan Cameron, at the Battle of Quebec with the 78th Highland Regiment, Col. Simon Fraser's regiment.I found that Duncan's name on a list of wounded on the Olive Tree website
I hope some of this will help clarify my previous posting regarding Duncan Cameron, and Joseph and Martha Drury.
