Dear Mr MacAvoy,
On behalf of my Cameron and Long cousins, I thank you very much indeed for having obtained the death certificate of Captain Charles L Cameron. Unfortunately, none of his living descendants knew his date of death and do not know where he is buried. One possiblity is that he is buried in a NYC cemetery. His nephew, Edward Long, an infant, was laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery in New York City in 1855, so there may be other related Camerons and Longs buried there. Edward's parents, Marshal Long (born Ireland, 1826), & his wife Mary had resided in New York City from about 1850 to the late 1870s, when they moved to Newark. Neither Marshal Long or his wife are listed in the 1900 US Census, so they probably died in Newark or elsewhere in Essex Co, New Jersey, circa 1881-1900. Charles L Cameron's wife Elizabeth Long (born Ireland Nov 1825), was still living in February 1892 when she went to visit with her brother Stephen Moore Long in Washington, DC. Since Elizabeth Long Cameron is not listed in the 1900 US Census, she must have died circa 1892-1900 in either Essex Co, New Jersey, or in New York City. Her children resided in both places. So in a roundabout way, one could locate Charles Cameron's burial site. If you are interested in pursuing this, please let me know by email.
I'm not at all concerned regarding the fact that Charles L. Cameron's 1878 New Jersey Death Certificate records that his father's name was Charles Cameron rather than Donald Cameron, since almost all the other data fits (eg: name matches - Charles Lochiel Cameron; also date of birth: Apr 1815 - died June 30, 1878, aged 63 years, 2 mo; mother's name Elizabeth; teacher; fought in Civil War; resided in Newark; the fact that his descendants knew he died in Newark circa 1875-80; participated in the Battle of Gettysburg & suffered a lung wound which eventually lead to his death). Charles's father, Donald Cameron of Lochiel, Scotland, Chief of Clan Cameron, died in 1832 when Charles was only 17 years old. Children, especially the sons, can be notoriously inaccurate regarding the names of their grandparents. Actually, Captain Cameron's grandfather was a Charles Cameron, and also the Chief of the Clan Cameron of Lochiel. Although Charles L Cameron's NJ Death Certificate states he was born in Scotland, he was actually born in England. I believe that he found that to be somewhat embarrassing, since he told his children and grandchildren that he was born in Scotland. Does Charles L Cameron's NJ Death Certificate actually state that he was a veteran of the Civil War? Once again, thank you for all your help! Cheers! Count Caragata
