To all who have heard this story about the maid and a Cameron that ran away.
About 40 years ago, my father told me that my ggggrandmother was a lady in waiting to Queen Vicoria. My father passed in 1986 and I never had the foresight to ask him her name or where she stood in our family tree. Recently, a distant relative (whom I had never met) wrote to me and had asked whether I knew of the scandal in our family about a Capt. Cameron who ran off with a lady-in-waiting for the Queen. She was unsure of the details as well but would work on trying to find out what others in the family might know.
I have been trying to piece this puzzle together and can give you some facts. My great grandmother was Charlotte Annie Cameron. She married John Maguire Sweet of Saint John about 1871. Charlotte Annie Cameron's parents were John Cameron and Elizabeth Margeson. As Elizabeth Margeson Sweet was born in Nova Scotia, I don't believe it to be the two of them that are the subject of this story unless her birthplace is in question.
According to an obituary for my great grandmother in 1926, her father (John Cameron) was born in England. It may be that we need to know of John Cameron's parents to determine whether there is any truth in this or not. Based on the age of their children, John Cameron would have been born sometime between 1810 and 1830. My great grandmother was born in 1848 so that would be a logical assumption.
If John Cameron's parents were the two that "ran away", they would have been born about 1790-1810 or so. As Queen Victoria reigned from about 1817 to her death towards the latter part of the 1800's, I suppose that his parents are who we should be looking for. At this time, I have found no information to tell me who John Cameron's parents were. If someone has that verifiable information, I can compare his mother's name against a list I found at a website that details Queen Victoria's attendants at her coronation. Possibly they ran away before she was coronated and her name won't be listed.
It is an interesting story that would be made more interesting with facts. I only hope that those who know of it are still with us and can give us more details.
