Cocke Co, TN ->Barry Co, MO-> Grayson Co, TX
Long story short, My gr gr gr grandpa was William H Cameron...pension files state he was born in Cocke Co, TN abt 1831.Next the pension files state he married Mary Daugherty 8 Aug 1850 in Cleveland, Bradley Co, TN.The next time we find him, he is in Barry Co, MO...first son, Joseph Martin Cameron born 10 July 1851, second child born Martha Jane Cameron 15 Jan 1856, last son, William H Cameron, born 10 July 1861.Mary dies 20 July 1861, am assuming complications of child birth. That same year on 16 November 1861, William enlisted in the Union forces mustering in at Camp Weston, near Rolla, MO. He was a private in Company F, commanded by a Capt SP Barnes, in the 24th Mo Inf Volunteers commanded by a Col S. Boyd.At the time of enlistment, this small family were staying at the place of Joe Rogers, after enlisting he left his children in the care of James & Jane Pennel, witnesses to his marriage in Bradley Co, TN.
On or about 15Dec.1862, William came home on furlough from the hospital in St Louis, and on 22 Jan 1863 was captured by bushwhackers under the following circumstances:William and Monroe Thornhill left home saying they were going to the place of Joe Rogers for some cattle and were met by Joseph, his first son. They all started homeward with the cattle and after going some distance, were captured by guerillas commanded by John Turner.Joseph was sent home and neither Thornhill or Wm Cameron were heard from again. It further states, that the two men were held under guard and the following night taken out into the woods and shot.At the time, Peter McGee a slave owned by Margaret McGee, was present in the camp of the bushwhackers in the capacity of a servant to John Turner, her son-in-law.John Turner was a Captain in the Rebel army carrying on guerilla warfare in Barry Co.
All three of the children were placed in the guardianship of F. M. Cowgill until the age of 16 when they reached majority or guardianship changed.Rumor has it, that Joseph lied about his age and enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 14....this is not documented as of yet.In 1871, Joseph filed for a pension from the federal government for his father's death. As late as 1881, he was still arguing his case....in the end, the petition for pension was denied. The denial based on William being on furlough when he was killed.
In Joseph's pension files, he names his father as William Hawkins Cameron...bingo first red flagA Hawkins Cameron living with Henry Cameron in Bradley Co, TN in 1850, about the right age too.He also lists his siblings in the pension file as Martha Jane married a Lee (looks like Cameron) in Grayson Co, TX....bingo second red flagGrayson Co, TX, where Henry Cameron went and his father,Martin Cameron died there as well???After the war, Joseph went back to Bradley Co, TN to stay with family from approx 1865 to 1870...now this could have been Cameron or Daugherty family.
And then it gets even better, one of the witnesses Joseph used to prove he was a soldier in such and such regiment was a Jason L Matlock who stated that they were first cousins as his mother and Joseph's mom were sisters....and then I found this on ancestry.com.First child of Joseph Daugherty was James Matlock Daugherty and in 1849, the last child was named Hawkins Daugherty....too danged many coincidents for me.Has to be a relationship to all these folks...if I could just find the proof that ties them all together.
A lot of unproven conjecture here, but it definitely seems to fit.In Cocke Co TN, in 1840 there was a Joseph Camron, Martin Camran and Green Camren. What Ive learned from one other Cameron researcher is that Martin is believed to be the son of Joseph...no proof yet.And Henry Cameron is believed to be the son of Martin Cameron...and this Henry Cameron moved sometime between 1860 and 1870 to Grayson Co, TX.
Does anything here ring bells in your head?Ive been searching for this family since 1976...Id love to tie my Camerons in with someone in Cocke Co., TN.
Cheryl
