Obituary of Andrew Campbell
"AGED VETERAN DIES SUNDAY"
Andrew B. Campbell, Well Known Citizen of County Passes out
Sunday February 27 a death ocurried in the lower part of the county which removed forever from the walks of men well known and highly respected aged citizen farmer and veteran of Civil War, who pass away at his home from a complication of disorder of advance age of 81 years and a few days.
Andrew B. Campbell the deceased enlisted in the Army on the side of the Union August 13, 1862, mustered in service in Sept. 28, 1862. He was honorably discharged from service Aug 4, 1865 by reason of expiration of term of service. He was recruit of the 29th Illinois Company and enlisted the same time and served in the same company along with Wilse Hankins of the city. Deceased has been married 4 times and leaves children by his first wife. He was living with his fourth at the time of his death. She was prior to their marriage Mrs. Myers a widow lady living in the lower part of the county who with others survive him to mourn his death. The funeral was held Sunday at the family residence In the lower part of the county and was conducted by Rev. Joseph Crawford of Belknap. The remains were taken to the Salem cemetery for interment.

As a Civil War veteran, 'K' Company, 29th Illinois Infantry, Andrew was dropped from the roll on Mar 29, 1916 because of death. His Certificate No. was 210199. His pension was $36.00 per month and paid to January 4, 1916. His last address was RFD, Grand Chain, Illinois. His wife, Mary continued to draw $25.00 per month (Certificate 838798) to April 4, 1918 because of her death April 19, 1918. Her last address was RR#1, Box 102, Grand Chain, Illinois.

Louisa M Johnson, known as "Anna", a Cherokee Indian, departed Eastern Tennessee in the fall of 1838 at age four, on the "Trail of Tears" march called "Nunna dual Tsuny", which was dictated by U.S.President Andrew Jackson by the Removal Act of 1830, and implemented with the Treaty of New Echota signed by President Jackson in 1836. It is believed that Louisa M Campbell departed the Cherokee Agency in Eastern Tennessee located near Calhoun, Tennessee, in October 1838, on the Northern route of the march, which crossed the states of Tennessee and Kentucky, and proceeded into Southern Illinois near Golconda in Pope County. George and Lavina Johnson, accepted Louisa M Johnson into their home likely because Louisa's parents or family members died in Illinois on the Trail of Tears, as did over 4,000 of the Cherokee marchers.
Louisa M. Johnson apparently resided in the George Johnson household in Massac County, Illinois, until at least she was age 19. She was either married or by common law marriage to Andrew Boling Campbell in 1854. Mr. Campbell of Massac County was a farmer, and later served in the U.S. Civil War as a Private in Company K, 29th Infantry, Illinois Volunteers. Eleven children were born of the union, the first in 1854 when both Andrew Boling Campbell and Louisa M. Johnson Campbell were 20 years old, and the last, a son, John Hambelton Campbell, born 5 November 1878, who was age 7 at the time of his mother's death in 1885.
Louisa M. Johnson is buried in Salem Cemetery in Massac County, Illinois. The top portion of her headstone is carved with a Cherokee Rose, the emblem of the Cherokee "Trail of Tears", and the official flower of the State of Georgia.

Last Rites for Ulysses Campbell Held Sunday
Funeral Services for Ulysses Campbell, 82, were held Sunday Aug 20, at 2 p.m. from Aikins Funeral Chapel with Rev. O.L. Angel officiating. Campbell died Friday at Bowman's Nursing Home. Singers were Mrs. O.L. Angel and Miss Marie Williamson at the piano. Burial was in the Lower Salem Cemetery. He is survived by two brothers: John Campbell of Salem, IL and Richard Campbell of Metropolis and one sister, Mrs Rosie Phenix of Karnak, Illinois.

Ulysses Campbell's funeral service was held at Wilson's Funeral Home in Karnak Sunday afternoon and burial at Lower Salem Chuech. He was a brother of Mrs. Renia Phenix.

Amdrew Perry Little, 83, of Route 1 Grand Chain died Sunday at Massac Memorial Hospital. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, 2 pm at the Hollerman church of Christ with Bro. Wiley Mathis officiating. Music was by Janice Bryant, Wanda Hohns, Luna Farley and Ronald Bryant. Burial was in the IOOF Cemetery in Metropolis, IL. with Louis Bayless, J W Meyer, Arthur Meyer, Lavern Whitelock, Pail Anderson and George Little serving as pallbearers. Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Little is survived by his wife, Alma; two sons, Harold of Massac County and Gerald of St. Louis; and 11 grandchildren.

From the Hillerman News - information not dated. Fred Penix, son of Mr & Mrs James Penix of nea Gabbtown, died suddenly in Metropolis Sunday morning. He had come here on the Ben McGhee bus with a number of Christmas shoppers. The bus was parked on the corner of Seventh and Market Streets. When it was to return home, Penix was found in an unconscious condition. He was taken home and died there. Coroner Baynes set the hour of inquest off today. Further particulars next week.

Willard Abernathy was accidently shot and killed by his grandfather, George M. Campbell, while George was hunting on the Abernathy farm in 1946. This was so disastrous to George that he would not touch a gun for years. After he returned to hunting, a shotgun exploded in his hand, which cost George two or three fingers.

George Moore Campbell, born July 11, 1883, passed away January 23, 1974 at the age of 90 years, 6 months, and 10 days.
December 13, 1902 Mr. Campbell was married to Hattie Lancaster to this union were born 12 children, 5 deceased those remaining Chester, Marvin, Raymond, Arlen, Roy, Pearl Hazel, and Ester Nichen.
On January 2, 1937 Mr. Campbell was married to Elizabeth Phillips also remaining are 31 grandchildren, 75 great grandchildren, 8 greatgreat granchildre, 28 great step grandchildren.
Of the two families 203 descendants.
George Campbell was baptized into our Savior in November of 1932.
Funeral arrangements were held at Nunnelee Funeral Home, at 1:00, Saturday the 26th, 1974 at the church of Christ in Morley, MO. Brother George Huffstuffer officiated.

The body was taken to the Wildridge undertaking establishment where coroner George Bell was holding an inquest Wednesday afternoon. Mine officials understood following the ccident that Lannom was run over by a string of cars after falling off car while riding a trip.
