Well, so far I haven't found any ancestors with the surname FERNANDES, though my g-grandfather's name was Manuel Fernandes BRIMBAU. The information I have says that his father had the same name, though I don't know about the reliability of this information. I also don't know about Portuguese naming patterns. Could Fernandes (in Manuel Fernandes BRIMBAU) refer to one of his parents' names somehow?
