Ulysses Sherman Callison was born on his father's farm on Grassy Creek, near Leivasy, Nicholas County., West Virginia on September 20, 1863 to Thomas Beard Callison b. Mary 29, 1836 and Martha Ann Davis b. 1840. He had two brothers and two sisters, Theodocia Ernest, b. 14 March 1858, Victoria Ann, b. 18 November 1859, John James, b. 18 December 1861, and Valentine Byrd, b. 28 January 1866.
Sherman grew up on his father's farm, later becoming a farmer himself. He went to school a few years in a one-room school. His teacher was his cousin, Henry B. Davis.
Their mother died when Byrd was a little over a year old. The sisters took care of thier younger brothers until their father remarried about a year later.
Around 1886 Sherman and his two brothers went to Iowa. John remained in Iowa, Byrd went to Texas to join his father but Sherman returned to West Virginia to mary Anna Matilda Rudolph, b. 25 January 1867, whom he he had met beforegoing to Iowa. She lived on a farm near Snow Hill, Nicholas Co., West Virginia. They were married February 2, 1888. Their first home was a log cabin on his father's farm near Grassy Creek. On November 6, 1888, a daughter Frankie May, was born. After two years of farming Sherman decided it was too difficult and unprofitable to raise crops on land full of rocks and stumps on hillsides. He decided to give coal mining a try, so the moved to Beechwood, Fayette Co. West Virginia. A son, Victorwas born here June 5, 1891.
Sherman and Annie then moved to Cliff Top. A second son, Vivian Rudoloph was born November 30, 1893.
Around 1890 Sherman was receiving letters from his father, brother and sisterin Texas describing it as a wonderful place to live. In March 1896 Sherman decided to leave Cliff Top and join the relatives in Texas.
the had to go to Charleston to board a train for Weatherford, Texas. The trip took about three days with changes being made at Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Ft. Worth. Thomas Beard's farm was about 16 miles from Weatherford. They made that part of the trip in a wagon pulled by mules.
The family lived in a 3 room log house on the land owned by Thomas Beard. Here Margie Ernest was born May 31, 1896 and Linnie Catherine, December 5, 1898.
After living in Texas 4 years, they heard the reports of new lands in Oklahoma Territory. In March 1899 all three families decided to sell and move to Oklahoma Territory. They made the trip in covered wagons which took about 3 weeks. Sherman's wagon was pulled by a four horse team. He bought a claim of 160 acres, for $300.00 near Richmond, Woodward Co., Oklahoma.
Lillian Emerson, b. 5 May, 1901, George Pleasant, b. 9 April 1903 and Verla Maud, b. 6 February 1905 were born and raised there during Sherman's farming years.
In 1910 the family moved to Alva, Woods Co., Okla. where Sherman engaged in the grocery business. Sherman and Annie thought living in Alva would provide their children an ideal opportunity to further their education as Oklahoma's State Normal School was located there. Six of their children attended there and five graduated as teachers.
Many moves were made by this family but each move was p lanned and executed by Sherman to better provide for his family. Sherman died December 21, 1943 and was buried in Alva Municipal Cemetery.
