THE DAILY TRIBUNE - JOHNSTOWN,
FRIDAY JUNE 30, 1899
MET DEATH AT MANILA
Charles H. Callihan, Who Married an Ebensburg Girl, Accounted For.
Mr. W. K. Gillespie, of W. K. Gillespie & Co., the Pittsburg wholesale grocers, received a letter from an officer of one of the Regular Army regiments in Manila Wednesday announcing the death of Charles H. Callihan, a former well-known business man of Braddock who had been missing from his home for nearly two years. Callihan, who married Miss Fannie Richardson, an Ebensburg girl, was for some years in the employ of W. K. Gillespie & Co., and later became a member of the firm of Callihan, Schaefer & Co., grocers at Braddock. The firm did an extensive business for a time, but met with business reverses and was compelled to dissolve.
After the failure Callihan disappeared from home and his family hearing nothing from him, it was feared he had met a violent death. When the war broke out his friends concluded that if alive Callihan would enlist, and it was reported once that he had gone to Cuba. This may or may not have been true. The letter received by Mr. Gillespie stated that Callihan had enlisted under the name of Charles Osten; that he had been wounded and died. Prior to his death he gave his correct name and requested a comrade to send word to Mr. Gillespie, who would notify his family and friends. It is said that Mr. Gillespie has been providing for Mrs. Callihan and her child since the disappearance of her husband.
