New news on the grandmother of John C. Calhoun
Some interesting information has been uncovered.
IN Lancaster County, Pennsylvania where the Calhoun family first came when they arrived in America, there were two known men named James Montgomery.
One of these has been claimed by "tradition" to have been a brother of Catherine Montgomery Calhoun. It is this James Montgomery that came to America with the Calhoun family? This is also "tradition."
The second man named James Montgomery, paid land taxes on his land located near Chestnut Level, and on a branch called Fishing Creek. from 1724 through 1728. This was in Chester County, then in 1729 Lancaster County was created and then the township of Drumore was created.
In 1724 and 1725, James Montgomery was enumerated on the Tax List with Walter Crocket. Walter Crocket also paid land taxes in Chester County. His Widow, continued to pay these land taxes until after 1726.
But, that will be another story.
