James Calhoun was married to George Custer's sister. She and George Custer's wife accompanied the cavalry for several days when they first set out on the Little Big Horn mission. James Calhoun's brother Fred was a civilian employee with the army, and he also was killed in the battle. The only other thing I have been able to find out about Fred is that he had some sort of military charge brought against him earlier for accompanying his brother without being in the army. I believe that was solved when he got the civilian employee position.I have not been able to find out who their parents were.
Calhoun and his wife had no children born of their marriage. In researching the issue of children, I found two children who claimed have been his children; however, they were the children of a Sioux woman married to a native Sioux who later claimed to have been Calhoun. His descendants shared a couple of stories with me until we shared photos, and they were astonished that James Calhoun was a blonde. Custer in his writings called him the "blonde Adonis".
