Amos DAVIS/Phebe CALHOUN/Eliza ROSS
I am searching for the family of Amos Davis and particularly his children and stepchildren.
I know he was born in Penn in 1810-1811 and he married PHEBE CALHOUN in Fayette Co., Indiana in Feb 1847. Phebe was the daughter of John Calhoun and Elizabeth Middleton and had siblings William, Mary, and Elizabeth. Together, Amos and Phebe had Elmira and Evaline and I suspect CHARLES DAVIS in 1862, who was my great great grandfather.
HOWEVER.
Phebe died in Jasper co., Iowa in 1866, and Amos remarried Eliza Ross in 1869.Eliza had children by her first marriage, and I cannot find out for sure if Charles F belonged to her or to Phebe.Census records from 1870 show that Charles F was 8 yrs old - making him born around 1862. But the marriage record for Amos and Eliza from Jasper County states that Eliza had a C. F. from her first marriage, among other children. She was from New York.
Supposedly, Charles married my gg grandmother, Anna Loiseau, in South Dakota in 1884. But an 1885 census shows that Amos, Eliza and age 22 Charles lived in Iowa. A family letter from Anna's brother states that "Charley" died in 1893 in Moody Co., SD, but I haven't found a death record or burial record for him anywhere.Anna remarried Trueworthy Hackett and lived happily ever after in So. Dak.
Does anyone know anything about this family? Were there two Charles's? Was his mother Phebe Calhoun Davis, or Eliza Ross Davis?
I have posted this request on the Davis surname site as well, and am going to do the same for Iowa and Penn and So. Dak.
