I believe that James Madison Calhoun was the son of Elijah and Mary (Eaton) Calhoun, and not the son of John B. & Rebecca Payne/Paine Calhoun.
I have an obituary of a Mary Calhoun Lee that states "she was the sister of J.M. Calhoun, of this county". Mary Calhoun Lee was the daughter of Elijah & Mary (Eaton) Calhoun who are buried at Bethel Presbyterian Church.
In Katherine Dunning Calhoun's book, she only surmizes that James Madison Calhoun was the son of of John B. Calhoun because they lived in the same area.
Rebecca Todd, wife of James Madison Calhoun, was born and raised in the Oconee Station area of SC, and was a member of Bethel Presbyterian church from early youth. James Madison Calhoun's property came from his inlaws.
There were only 2 daughters born of this marriage - Mary Elizabeth and Margaret Ella Calhoun.
