James Calhoun b.1723 was a cousin of Patrick Calhoun b.1727. Patrick's father, James Patrick Colhoun married to Catherine Montgomery was a brother to Hugh Calhoun 1692-1753.
So your James Calhoun b.1723 would be a first cousin, once removed, to John C. Calhoun.
