William Colhoun, b. ca 1750
Does anyone out there know anything about the following WILLIAM COLHOUN?He was born ca 1750 in Ireland, the son of William COLHOUN, Sr. and Isabella CARY.His first wife was Rosa, who died in Ireland.
This paragraph is what Orval O. Calhoun wrote to me about the above William COLHOUN, Jr.: He decided to go to America, where a lot of their COLHOUN relatives had gone. His parents gave him the equivalent of four thousand dollars in linen to take with him, to sell in America in order to get himself established over there. But nature had a hand in his future, and when he was within seeing distance of Boston Harbor, their ship ran into foul weather and were shipwrecked. William lost his cargo of linen, but he was saved from drowning. He was in Pennsylvania for awhile with relatives, where he was able to relate his misfortune. He left there for parts unknown and we are unable to locate anything on his whereabouts after that.
The following is from an 1889 Wright Co., MO History:William CALHOUN, was born, reared and married in Ireland, and there his first wife died. He thereupon immigrated to America, locating in South Carolina, where he erected a large mill, and in time acquired considerable wealth. He married his second wife in South Carolina, and by her became the father of two children.Note:One of these children was James H. C. Calhoun, my husband’s 3rd great grandfather.
As you can see there are similarities in these two articles.I would certainly appreciate any and all input that anyone might have on this man. Please email me at:[email protected]
