Hello Katharine: We are researching our Charles Carter in detail and there is Mass Confusion over his wife. What is your basis for Elizabeth? (You at least correctly use Wythe County!) Curious how all three of you use Elizabeth - but with radically different persons.

From our prepared notes:

There is absolutely no connection of our Carter family to Spotsylvania nor Goochland; Capt. George [well proven father of Charles] was most probably down in Pittsylvania/Halifax by 1765 and is proven beyond all doubt in Montgomery by 1782, when Charles comes of age; this is why his birth in 1762 instead of 1760 becomes so important. Even if Charles was a Private in the Revolution, it was well over and done with by 1786; there would no longer be an opportunity for a "chance encounter" with an unknown Elizabeth.

1. The marriage to Elizabeth Pulham in Oct 1786 back in Spottsylvania is ludicrous. [1950 Manuscript]
2. The marriage to Elizabeth Allen Kendrick of the same date back in Goochland is ludicrous [email below]
3. The marriage to Elizabeth Wilson? Calfee is in the Ball Park, but proven in error by The Calfee Tree.

Curious how they each use Elizabeth, but how do we know even this? Is the date correct, but as with all of the Mourning Carter Bible, are the proposed locations someone's fantasy? (There are many proven errors in the Bible).

The 1950 Manuscript shows the first marriage of Sarah/Sally to David Stewart on 24 March 1801 in Virginia - with the second marriage to John Gilmore on 1 March 1828 in Pulaski. Per Katharine's post, Sarah HAD to be born 1786 or earlier, even if she was already "on the way" before a marriage in 1786!!! The marriage of Charles HAD to be in Montgomery/Wythe!!!

On the other hand, there is a John Gilmore age 66 with wife Sarah at age 64 (1785/1786 - but born KY) in the 1850 US Census KY Pulaski, Division 3. She SHOULD have been at least fifteen for a marriage in 1801? All in all, no proof one way or the other.
