John Caldwell.born Prestwick,Ayrshire ,Scotland.died1683 became a wealthy merchant in Ulster and owned Castle Caldwell. His son was created a baronet of Ireland,23 June 1683.Greatgrandson of the latter Sir James Caldwell was created a Count of Milan in the Holy Roman Empire in 1749,the title did remain in the family. The second baronet was a distinguished officer in the Austrian service and the fifth was treasurer General of Lower Canada . The Caldwells of Ulster can almost all be traced back to Ayrshire Scotland and were ''Planters" i.e. they went over to Ulster in the time of King James 6th of Scotland 1st of Gt Britain to supplant protestantism and also improve the farms and trade.
