Castle Caldwell originally was a manor house built by the Blennerhasits (SP) in 1612 on a grant from the English King. In 1662 James Caldwell "acquired" fort Blennerhasit added to it and it was renamed Castle Caldwell. I have been working with the Northern Ireland government officials in Belfast and six business men in Belleek to restore the castle.
True the floors and supporting beams are missing and some wall structure needs rebuilding but most of the castle is in good shape. Both flankers (the square buildings to the front on either side of the main entrance are in excellent condition. The growth in the interior is misleading as just beyond the main door was an atrium and vegetation was supposed to grow there. The five peat furnaces that supplied heat are nearly buried and there is little trace of the circular stair case to the upper floors.

Volunteers anyone?

Alan Caldwell
